History of the Contest

The Nathan's Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual American hot dog competitive eating competition held on Independence Day at the original Nathan's Famous location in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City.

The contest was first held in 1916 as a publicity stunt to attract customers to the restaurant. The first winner, James Mullen, ate 13 hot dogs in 12 minutes.

The contest has grown in popularity over the years and is now one of the most popular competitive eating events in the world.
