Early Life and Career
Thomas Jeffrey Hanks was born on July 9, 1956, in Concord, California. He attended California State University, Sacramento, where he studied theater. Hanks made his film debut in 1980's He Knows You're Alone.
Breakthrough Roles
Hanks' breakout role came in the 1984 romantic comedy Splash, in which he starred opposite Daryl Hannah. He followed this up with a series of successful comedies, including Big (1988), A League of Their Own (1992), and Sleepless in Seattle (1993).
Dramatic Success
In the 1990s, Hanks transitioned to more dramatic roles. He won his first Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 1993 AIDS drama Philadelphia. He also starred in the historical dramas Forrest Gump (1994), Apollo 13 (1995), and Saving Private Ryan (1998).

Hanks continued to star in both comedies and dramas in the 2000s. He won his second Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in the 2000 drama Cast Away. He also starred in the blockbuster Toy Story franchise and the romantic comedies You've Got Mail (1998) and Larry Crowne (2011).
